This 1962 Volkswagen truck was purchased from the grandson of the original owner
(this is a true barn find) as it had been sitting for 10 years. The truck was purchased
new in Dallas, Texas in l962. The original birth certificate has been obtained from
Volkswagen Germany. Most service records and all major service work is documented
with receipts. Although this truck was in good condition at the time of purchase, it
needed repainting. A complete restoration was done. The unibody was completed
disassembled, stripped, and repainted top and bottom the original Ruby Red color base clear.
The underneath frame axles, brake drums and suspension has been completely
painted with acrylic enamel semi-gloss black. All the window and door rubber has
been replaced and new glass has been installed in the windshield. The bumpers were straightened,
repaired and painted the original color, Silver White, along with all the wheels. The hub
caps were painted original Light Grey with Silver White VW center emblem.
All original equipment was cleaned and reused where possible. The rear tail lights,
front turn signal lenses and interior and exterior door handles are the only items replaced.
The interior was redone with original matching vinyl and decor. New cardboard
door panels and headliner material was covered with matching seat vinyl instead of
just painting cardboard panels light grey like the original would have been.
This is not a matching number vehicle due to the original owner had a engine fire
and put i n a new 1500 cc engine in 1978. I decided to install a completely rebuilt
1600cc engine. This is a very rare pickup as these trucks stopped coming to the
U.S. in the l960's. This is rated as a 3/4 ton and was a real workhorse in its day.
The truck has standard reduction gears which gives the truck great load end torque
which gave it amazing pulling power and load-carrying capabilities. I have had
as much as 1 full ton of weight on this type truck and had no problem.
This fun to drive head-turner puts smiles on everyone who sees it.
