During its entire production run, the Porsche 356 and its variants have enjoyed much success in rallying and road-racing events, most notably the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, the Carrera Panamericana and from there all the way down to the nascent club race and hillclimb events that drove many Americans into brand new Porsche dealerships. Several Porsche 356s were stripped down in weight, and were modified in order to have better performance and handling for these races directly from the factory; a few notable examples include the Porsche 356 SL and the Porsche 356A Carrera GT.

The basic design of the 356 remained the same throughout its lifespan, with evolutionary, functional improvements rather than yearly superficial styling changes. Nevertheless a variety of models in both coupe and cabriolet forms were produced from 1948 through 1965. In 1955, with numerous small but significant changes, the 356A was introduced. Its internal factory designation, "Type 1", gave rise to its nickname "T-1" among enthusiasts. Cabriolets were offered from the start, but in 1956, of the total production run of 3,948 cars only 429 were Cabriolets. Not long thereafter, in early 1957, a second revision of the 356A was produced, known as Type 2 (or T-2).

With a complete set of restoration receipts totaling well over $110,000 that includes no compensation for the vendor's thousands of hours of time over eighteen months, the 1956 Porsche 356A Type 1 Cabriolet on offer before you reflects quite possibly one of the finest examples on offer - if not in existence - anywhere. A complete pictorial album of the restoration is on display with the car and conveys to the next owner. In addition to the car's number and date-matching correctness as regards pan, body and engine, all this car's instruments, fuel tank and fuel level sender are dated to its original build. Inside, the seat leather was correctly tacked onto the wood frames - no staples were used on this car's interior - just as it was delivered from the factory. The top is correctly nailed to the wood frame at the rear cowl, with new wood top bows having been hand-fabricated. There are only a couple of serious Porsche restorers in the country that can do this to factory specifications and the vendor used one of them. Even the grill cloth on radio speakers is correct; having reproduced it for this car, the vendor then sold the rights to it to the largest Porsche aftermarket dealer in the world.

Having personally restored every sub-system on the car himself, the vendor attests to the thoroughness with which the brakes, steering, suspension, pedal cluster, control cables and every nut and bolt inside, outside and in-between were attended to; even the nuts and washers on the transaxle are the correct 14mm that is nearly impossible to find. The car's tools are correct and entirely concours-correct including a correct 2-Kilo copper hammer for the Rudge knock offs reproduced from one in an originally-delivered Rudge wheel car. An original Owners Manual in the correct cover also conveys along with service tags such as one for the Hirschmann "Red Tip" antenna and the correct 'Oil Tag' that is wired onto the filter canister indicating that Shell oil was used at the factory for the original fill. With few if any peers to this quality in existence, this T-1 "A" was restored to the highest standards of excellence while remaining entirely correct throughout.
