Holman and Moody Factory-backed Cobra Team Car Offered at Russo and Steele’s 10th Anniversary Monterey Auction

Monterey, CA (Jul 8, 2010) -- Located in the heart of the historic downtown Monterey at the Marriott Hotel Russo and Steele will showcase over 250 collector automobiles to the thousands of enthusiasts that descend on Monterey during what has become known as one of the most prestigious week in the collector automobile hobby. A range of the most luxurious and collectable European sports, American muscle, hot rods and custom automobiles will cross the block this August 12-14, 2010 as part of Russo and Steele’s 10th Anniversary Monterey auction event. This 1963 Shelby Cobra, CSX2009 was delivered to Shelby American in August of that first pivotal year. In an agreement with the Ford Motor Company, CSX2009 was sent to Holman and Moody to be prepared for the racing circuit as the only factory-backed Cobra team car for the Ford Motor Company. The goal of this effort was for this car to make its mark in the world of FIA/SCCA racing. CSX2009 went on to exceed the expectations that Ford had of it with numerous trips to the winner’s circle at the hands of such drivers as Augie Pabst, Peter Jopp, Tom Payne, Bob Johnson, Ray Cuomo, Bob Beinerth, Gene Fisher and Dick Stockton.

This proven-tough 289ci Cobra had a historically significant racing career that figures prominently right in the middle of the 'Golden Era' of high-performance sports car glory; truly unparalleled, its career spanned ten seasons from 1962-1971. It was a four-time Northeastern SCCA BP Divisional Champion and second overall as late as 1970 at Road Atlanta during the SCCA ARRC National Championships.

After an illustrious career, CSX2009 was purchased by its current owner and restored over a ten-year period into the beautiful car that it is today. The vision for CSX2009 was for it to continue on in competition in a handful of vintage racing series and events, be competitive on the Concours d’Elegance Circuit and at the same time have the bragging rights to a fantastic and unparalleled racing history. Not disappointingly, CSX2009 has been a proven Shelby Concours winner at SAAC13, and SAAC32. It has been featured in many magazines, books and calendars ranging from 'Fabulous Mustangs', Petersen Publishing’s Calendar and Dave Friedman’s well-known tome 'Shelby Cobra.'
