Russo and Steele Offers Significant Alfa Romeo GTA at Monterey Auction

Targa Florio-winning Scuderia Monzeglio Team Car to be Sold at No Reserve on August 20th

Monterey, CA. (Jul 20, 2005) -- Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions will offer a very significant Alfa Romeo 1600 GTA Squadra Corse racer at their August 20 auction in Monterey, CA. The Scuderia Monzeglio team car was driven to a class victory in the 1971 Targa Florio by Maurizio Zanetti and Renzo Ruspa. It will be sold at NO RESERVE.
This 1966 Alfa, chassis 613883, was prepared for racing by Autodelta and sold to Scuderia Monzeglio, the front-running privateer Alfa Romeo team in Europe.

It made multiple appearances at significant endurance races at Monza, Spa, the Targa Florio, and other major European circuits through 1972.

Alfa Romeos are named after Shakespeare's lovers, Romeo and Juliet. There are Alfa Romeos and Alfa Giuliettas. This car has a Romeo and Juliet tale of it's own!

The first driver was a romantic Frenchman. The original crew chief on the car recounts that the driver's girlfriend was planning on attending one of his major races. The night before the race, she called to inform him that she had met someone new, and would not be attending. Grief-stricken, the Frenchman couldn't stand the thought of carrying on without her. When he didn't report to the starting grid before the big race, his crew set out to find him. They found him dead in his hotel room. He had hung himself in the shower.

The car will be sold at Russo and Steele’s “Sports and Muscle at the Marriott” auction on August 20th in Monterey, CA. This boutique collector car auction is concurrent with the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, Concorso Italiano, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. All 75 cars offered by Russo and Steele will be sold at NO RESERVE.
