Regardless, none of the auctions in January are more fun to watch than Russo and Steele.
Two Important Shelby GT350s to Cross the Block in Monterey
Russo and Steele Offers Competition Model and Early 2-Digit Car at No ReserveThe first, a 1965 Competition GT350-R (SFM5R535) was raced in Peru where it achieved many significant victories. A blown engine in 1967 forced it into retirement until it was first restored in 1984, thus sparing it from the extensive abuse that many of these cars have today. In that initial season, GT350-Rs took seven of the top ten places in SCCA B-Production racing. Of the thirty-seven GT350-R models ever produced, an estimated 30 remain. This example is well-documented and in outstanding condition.
Another important GT350 offered by Russo and Steele is SFM5018, a rare, 1965 two-digit early model (# 18). These original GT350s were built along side the Cobras in Venice Beach, before Shelby American moved its operation to Los Angeles Airport. These low-number cars are extremely scarce today, and this one has just undergone a full “money-is-no-object” restoration. It is a consistent Concours winner, and it’s former owner was baseball great Reggie Jackson.
